Poker History and Rules

Poker, in recent years, has become the most popular game at casinos and for a long time, the most popular casino game to be played outside a casino. There are several variations of poker and poker games differ in how the cards are dealt, how many hands can be formed, whether the high or low hand wins the pot in a showdown, limits on bets and how many rounds of betting are allowed. Poker is believed to be the only casino game that can truly be beat because in reality, players are not playing against the ‘house’, they are playing against each other, with the house taking a cut off each pot.

There are three main families which are used to group poker; stud, draw, and community. Stud is one of the oldest forms of poker played. Players are dealt five cards, one at a time, face-up or face-down, depending on who’s rules you are using, and a round of betting between each dealt card. Today, the most popular form of stud is 7 card stud, where players receive seven cards and must make the best five card hand.

Draw is the simplest style of poker and the most widely played. Players are dealt five cards face-down. After betting, players look at their cards and keep or discard unwanted cards, get dealt new cards in the attempt of making a better hand. Again, depends who you are playing with, but this will determine how many cards are allowed to be discarded and how many turns each player gets. Five card draw is the most popular version of draw poker.

Lastly, community poker, where players are dealt 2 cards face down and a set of community cards face-up in the center of the table. The community cards are for everyone to use to make the best 5 card hand possible. Texas Hold’em is the most famous community poker game.
